Uncontrolled Tenancies(UT)

Uncontrolled Tenancies (UT) in the UK housing context are tenancies that do not provide a landlord with any legal rights or protection and are usually unregulated. They are usually for short-term lets, often for no more than a few months. UTs are typically used for those tenants who do not wish to enter into a formal agreement with their landlord, or who may not have the financial means to do so. UTs are meant to provide a form of flexible and often low-cost housing solution for tenants with limited resources, but there is no legal protection for either party and no legal guarantee of tenure. UTs are often informal and often unregulated, meaning that tenants are not protected by law and can be asked to leave at any time. UTs do not offer any protection from eviction or guarantee that the landlord will provide adequate housing standards. UTs are therefore not suitable for those in vulnerable situations, and may leave both parties at risk of exploitation.
