Discretionary Grounds(DG)

Discretionary Grounds (DG) are a set of criteria used by local authorities in the UK to assess an individual’s eligibility for housing assistance. These criteria allow local authorities to make decisions based on their own judgement about who should receive housing assistance and who should not. The purpose of Discretionary Grounds is to provide a flexible approach to the allocation of housing resources, taking into account individual circumstances such as financial hardship, medical need, family size and other factors. Discretionary Grounds can be used to assess both general needs housing and temporary housing. The scope of Discretionary Grounds is broad and can include factors such as local housing need, the availability of suitable accommodation, the applicant’s personal circumstances and the local authority’s own housing policy. Discretionary Grounds are used to determine who should receive housing assistance, and who should not.
