Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) is a governmental department of the United Kingdom, which is responsible for policy and regulations related to the environment, food, agriculture, and rural affairs. The department works to protect the environment and preserve the countryside, as well as promoting sustainable development. It also works to ensure that the food and agriculture industry works in the interests of consumers and the environment. DEFRA is responsible for formulating and implementing policy on the environment, food, agriculture, and rural affairs across England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. The department works closely with local authorities and other government departments in order to ensure that these policies are effective and appropriate for the needs of constituents and the environment. DEFRA also works to ensure that the UK meets its international commitments in regards to the environment, food, agriculture, and rural affairs.
